Old English Backgammon

Learn the rules for a variation on the predominant standard Backgammon game, called Old English Backgammon.

The game of Old English Backgammon is pretty much the same as standard Backgammon, but has some minor differences. It's rules were the commonly accepted way of playing the game in the UK until the 1970s.

  • You may have no more than five checkers on a point.
  • You may use only part of your moves and are not required to use all of them if you have a choice of moves open to you.
  • Doubling using a doubling cube in a game is an American invention, so it is generally accepted that there is no doubling in a game of Old English Backgammon.
