Backgammon Accessories

Backgammon can be played professionally for high stakes so, like casinos, players may insist on special precision dice and professional throwing cups when playing to make sure no unfair or underhand practises are carried out. Learn about a range of Backgammon accessories here.

Precision Backgammon Dice

Similar to precision casino dice, professional Backgammon dice are specially made out of cellulose acetate to within a tolerance of 1/1000th of an inch to ensure every roll is fair and completely random.  However, they typically differ from casino dice in a number of ways.

Unlike casino dice, Backgammon dice will typically have quite rounded corners so they roll easier and to prevent damage to the playing surface.  The size is generally smaller than casino dice, varying from between 1/2 an inch to 5/8 an inch.  Like casino dice, the spots will be drilled and filled with material of the same weight as the material removed and they will have flush faces.

Both players in a game of Backgammon throw two dice, and they may each have their own pair or may possibly take it in turns to use just one set.

Doubling cubes are dice marked 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and are used when gambling for stakes in Backgammon  Players double their bets during a game and turn the cube face-up accordingly to show this.  Doubling cubes are not thrown and so don't need to be precision manufactured.  There are a variety of doubling cubes available to the serious Backgammon player from cheap plastic doublers to ones made from various metals and minerals.

Dice Throwing Cups

It is possible to control and influence the results of dice rolls using a number of various crooked techniques (To learn more about these cheating methods, visit dice-play's dice control page)  In Backgammon, special dice throwing cups are used to help prevent the use of controlled dice rolls and ensure the dice results are completely fair and above board.

Backgammon dice throwing cups are manufactured with specific elements in their design to deliberately prevent dice control.  A professional dice throwing cup will have a ribbed interior which ensures the dice must turn and roll out of the cup and not possibly slide out.  A similar feature will be a tripped lip around the cup's rim which ensures the same result.

There are a large range of different dice cups available to suit all backgammon player's needs, from cheap plastic to deluxe leather, from small oval-shaped cups that are easy to pack away with a board, to large round cups to hold the largest professional precision backgammon dice available.

Dice Bags

There a range of different small drawstring bags available used for storing a player's dice. They are made in a range of different materials, including felt, silk and velour.
